玛利亚，是一名17岁的卡齐格尔族(Kaqchikel)玛雅人少女，她的父母经营一家咖啡种植场，就在一座活火山的山脚下。玛利亚将嫁给一位在种植园工作的工作，然而她渴望去发现外面的世界，渴望在山的那一边她从未到过甚至也无法想象的神秘的世界。为此，玛利亚引诱了一名咖啡采收工人，想让他带自己到美国过。然而对方却丢下她一个人逃跑了。从这时，玛利亚开始用一双新的眼睛来发现她的家园以及文化。。The story opens in Balochistan, in a small, scarcely ‘wired’ village bordering Iran and Afghanistan.
