1926年初，一心维护法律公义的大律师徐查理，因不堪忍受种种钱权交易的黑幕愤而辞职，来到江南重镇江州最穷的贫民区开了一家贫民法律事务所，专为请不起律师的穷人打官司。在与恶势力对抗的过程中，徐查理结识了富有正义感的女探长凌小骨，二人逐渐产生爱情。一心为民的徐查理成了江州贫民区的刀笔英雄，但却因得罪军阀尚宏发而被其以杀人罪陷害入狱。曾经叱咤风云的大律师成为阶下囚，凌小骨为救心上人四处奔走，各方正义力量纷纷伸出援手，最终帮助徐查理洗脱罪名。徐查理与尚宏发抗争到底，组织起江州各方进步力量，并与挥师北上的北伐军取得联络。徐查理与凌小骨一起参加了北伐军攻克江州的战斗，凌小骨英勇牺牲，徐查理最终走上了寻找光明的新道路。。6 out of 7 people found the following comment useful.
