华北某大学的学生沈元中在粮栈门前被奸商派人暗杀了。沈元中生前好友王伯麟虽很善良，但却生性软弱，其父王文斋是个勾结日本走私粮食的奸商。女工金弟在沈元中生前被沈介绍给伯麟，沈元中死后，在金弟的帮助之下，伯麟有了很大的进步，并与金弟产生了爱情。但王文斋为了自己的利益，让伯麟与同行袁某的女儿蕴玉结婚。此时，日本侵略华北，局势紧张，王文斋乘机囤积大量粮食，伯麟劝阻其父，但王文斋不听，还阻止儿子参加爱国运动，让儿子与蕴玉去上海旅行，并想方设法拆散儿子与金弟。后来，金弟病死，伯麟从上海回来，得知金弟已死，曾一度消沉，但一想到沈元中的遗言和金弟曾对他的帮助，又重新振作起来。日本准备进攻华北要塞，王文斋为谋取利益，把囤积的粮食卖给日本人，并派妾弟宝生去接洽此事。伯麟得知此事，开枪打死了宝生，随后投奔了抗日义勇军的队伍。。Thale (17) has just moved with her parents to a small town after her mother has a new job in the local police.
